The 1/2oz half ounce Krugerrand was first minted in 1980, and is a very popular gold coin as it contains exactly a 1/2 troy ounce of pure gold. The gold is alloyed with copper, and the resulting purity is .9166 fine gold, which is 22 karat gold. The half ounce Krugerrand coins total weight is .545 troy ounces and it has a diameter of 27mm. Like all Krugerrand coins it has no legal tender value and normally sells just over the bullion price of gold. The design of the 1/2 oz Krugerrand is the same as that of the larger Krugerrand. The obverse has a picture of South African president Paul Kruger, and the reverse features the ebullient Springbok.
